British youngster Charlie Nesbitt has finally put pen to paper on a new contract to race in the Moto3 Junior World Championship for 2018.

The deal will see Nesbitt again race in the Estrella Galicia 0,0 garage for the Monlau Engineering Team, but this year the contract includes a wildcard for the British MotoGP event.

Nesbitt, who is managed by Michael Bartholemy and Scott Redding, will continue to receive support from Dorna as part of their plan to bring on British talent.

The bike chassis will be the same as this year’s because there were no changes to it last season although he will get the 2017 Moto3 World Championship specification engine for 2018.

“It’s awesome to have signed with Monlau Engineering again. I’m really happy because I know I can run in the leading group. It’s also great that I get to keep the same crew chief and data guy from this season because we’ve worked well together,” said Nesbitt.

“Next year I’ve got the bonus of competing in my home GP at world level too. Thank you to Dorna, Michael , Scott, Simon Whatley at SRS, Swindon Electrical and Warwick Allen of Home Instead. This opportunity is massive.”

Charlie Nesbitt started his weekend at Motorland for the penultimate round of the Moto3 Junior World Championship in a positive frame of mind. After two good results in the previous two rounds Nesbitt was on the pace quickly at the Motorland circuit.

In qualifying one Charlie Nesbitt made a huge impact. On his final flying lap he set a time of 1:59.140. Nesbitt’s superb time was just 0.410 seconds behind Dennis Foggia the leading rider in the Moto3 Junior World Championship. The time would have been good enough to put him eleventh on the grid in Moto3 at the GP round.

In the second qualifying period the team made some adjustments to see if they could improve the performance further. However, it didn’t work and upset the front of the bike. Although Nesbitt was unable to improve on the morning time it was good enough to see him line up 13th on the grid.

This round of the series only had one race and Nesbitt and the team had reverted to the settings they used for qualifying one. There was a delayed start after two red flag incidents in another championship series. Once the race eventually got underway Nesbitt made a good start and moved up to 11th position. On the third lap he closed down his team-mate Alonso Lopez and was running with the leading group. Unfortunately, he had a huge high-side coming out of turn fifteen. Nesbitt was stretchered off after twisting his ankle badly and he also got his hand caught under the bar causing his glove to explode damaging a finger.

Charlie Nesbitt said, “Qualifying was fantastic and I was looking forward to the race because I knew I could run at the front. To be honest I don’t know why I crashed. I went through the corner as I did on the previous two laps but this time I high-sided. I’m disappointed the way the race ended, for me, the team and the sponsors after we had shown really good pace and I was with the leading group. I’ve now got to move on and concentrate on the final round at Valencia. As always a massive thanks to Scott Redding, Michael Bartholemy, Simon at SRS, Swindon Electrical and the whole Monlau Engineering Team.”

After his incredible run-away success in the Hel Performance Motostar British Moto3 Championship the Swindon rider now has the opportunity of racing in an even more competitive championship competition.

The Monlau Group is an organisation in Spain that has a reputation of bringing on bright young talent and can boast that Marc Marquez was one of the riders to pass through their doors.

Charlie Nesbitt’s ability has clearly merited the opportunity to ride at this new level, and he can look forward to being well supported. Scott Redding has shown interest in helping the youngster for several years and has often provided mentoring and coaching. Now Nesbitt will also benefit from the experience of Michael Bartholemy and the Marc VDS team as his career progresses. Michael Bartholemy has over twenty years experience helping riders and teams and the Marc VDS team are World Moto2 championship title winners and also have a MotoGP win to their name.

Charlie Nesbitt said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for me. My family and I have given so much and worked so hard to get us here, and whilst I feel I have earned this opportunity it still feel very lucky to be riding for a team like Monlau Group. I am really positive about 2017 because I have an amazing group of experienced people around me that I can turn to for help and advice. I must thank my all my sponsors over the years that have enabled me to get this far and also Scott Redding, Michael Bartholemy and the Monlau Group for believing in me.”

Nesbitt in the points on Moto3 Junior World Championship debut

Charlie Nesbitt Moto3 JWC Valencia 2016Following his Hel Performance Motostar British Championship title victory Swindon’s Charlie Nesbitt was in Spain last weekend, competing in the final two races of the Moto3 JWC in Valencia.

The Moto3 JWC is seen as one of the best shop windows for riders looking to make the move to MotoGP paddock in the future. Nesbitt was riding for a new team, on different tyres and on a circuit he had never ridden before.

Fortunately for Nesbitt he was in great company as he was riding for the extremely professional Spanish team Monlau Engineering. In addition, he was being mentored over the weekend by none other than British MotoGP rider Scott Redding.

Due to the numbers of entries at the final round the qualifying was split into two groups. In the first qualifying session Nesbitt managed a lap time of 1:40.885 which placed him ninth on the time sheet and less than 1.2 seconds from the eventual championship winner Lorenzo Dalla Porta!

In the second qualifying session Nesbitt was unable to beat his previous time. After the lap times of both groups had been combined and the huge 44 rider grid for the two races on Sunday worked out, Nesbitt would line-up on row 6 in 18th position, a marvellous achievement in itself.

On Sunday morning the track temperature was cool for the first race, but despite this there was drama before the race even started. Championship leader Dalla Porta’s bike caught fire on the start line and had to be quickly removed from the circuit. After a short delay the lights went out and Nesbitt began his first ever Moto3 JWC race. He made up one position quickly.

Mid-way through the race Nesbitt was battling hard with Stefano Nepa and Vicente Perez as he held on to 15th position. Nesbitt went on to finish race one in an incredible 11th position and score five points in his first Moto3 JWC race.

In the second race Nesbitt lost a place early on in the frantic exchanges of the opening laps. By the end of the fourth lap he had recovered the position and was then second in a large group battling for most of the race. By the halfway stage Nesbitt had fought his way to 16th place and held his own in a group of riders to cross the line just six hundredths of a second away from scoring points again in only his second Moto3 World Junior Championship race.

Charlie Nesbitt Moto3 JWC Valencia 2016Charlie Nesbitt said, “Firstly I would like to thank Scott [Redding] and Michael [Bartholemy] for giving me this opportunity with Monlau it was such an amazing experienc. The racing is so close I even have rubber off someone else’s front tyre on my left leg! In the first race I had a good start and where the track was cold and spitting with rain everyone took a few laps to settle in and then battled all the way to the line finishing 11th in my first race there was unreal.

In the second race I had to start a row further back in the Centre and got away well. I was a little to cautious in the first two laps, I think just because of the lack of time on the bike, but the battles through the race were amazing.

Overall I am really happy with my debut in the CEV but a bit disappointed in my position in the second race.

I would like to say a massive thankyou to my family friends and sponsors for everything this year everyone has put in so much effort and I’ve had the time of my life doing it thank you all again.”
